AI Safety for Kids: 10 Rules Every Parent Needs

AI tools are everywhere now. Kids are using them for homework, for fun, and for everything in between.

That is not a bad thing. But kids need some simple rules to stay safe. Here are 10 rules every parent should know — and can start using tonight.

Why AI Safety Matters

AI can sound very confident — but it is not always right. It does not think or feel like a human. It just predicts what word comes next based on patterns it has seen.

Kids can easily trust an AI answer without checking if it is true. That can cause problems at school and in life.

Rule 1: Check the Age Limit

Most AI tools have a minimum age. Find out what it is before your child uses the tool. Do not create a fake age to get around it — those age rules exist to protect children.

Rule 2: Never Share Personal Information

This is the most important rule. Your child should never type their:

• Full name
• Home address
• School name
• Phone number
• Passwords
• Photos of themselves

A chatbot is not a private diary. It is a service run by a company.

Rule 3: Always Check Important Answers

Make this a family rule: if it matters, check it.

For homework, health questions, or news, always compare the AI’s answer with a textbook, a teacher, or a trusted website. Ask: is this actually true? Where did this information come from?

Rule 4: Stay Involved as a Parent

Young children should use AI with you nearby. Older kids need more freedom, but still need to know they can come to you if something feels wrong.

Ask them what they used the AI for. Make it a normal conversation, not an interrogation.

Rule 5: AI Is a Tool, Not a Friend

Chatbots can sound kind and friendly. But they do not have feelings. They do not actually care about your child.

If your child is upset or needs help with a real problem, they should talk to a real person — you, a teacher, or a trusted adult.

Rule 6: Think First, Then Use AI

AI should help kids think — not think for them. Try this simple routine:

1. Try to answer the question yourself first.
2. Then ask the AI for a hint or feedback.
3. Check the response — is it right?
4. Write the final answer in your own words.
5. Explain what you learned.

This keeps the brain working, not just copy-pasting.

Rule 7: Teach Kids That AI Can Be Unfair

AI does not always give a balanced view. It reflects the data it was trained on — and that data is not perfect. Show kids that the same question can get different answers from different tools. Ask: whose voice is missing here?

Rule 8: Be Honest About AI-Assisted Work at School

Different schools have different rules about using AI for assignments. Your child should follow their teacher’s rules and be honest when AI helped them. Using AI secretly to complete schoolwork can get them in trouble.

Rule 9: Know What to Do If Something Feels Wrong

Sometimes AI tools produce content that is scary, violent, or inappropriate. Teach your child to:

• Stop immediately.
• Close the tool.
• Tell a trusted adult.

No questions asked, no judgment.

Rule 10: AI Is Not a Replacement for Real Life

AI should not replace sleep, exercise, real friendships, reading, or just playing outside. Set clear times when screens and AI tools are put away. Real-world balance matters.
